AI water and energy use: the disclosed numbers

How much water and electricity does AI use? Every figure here comes from a company report, a research paper or an IEA or Berkeley Lab study, with a link to the page it is printed on. Withdrawal, consumption, per prompt and per company are kept in separate columns.

Arguments about how much water AI uses rarely line up because the numbers measure different things. A company can report withdrawal (all water taken in) or consumption (water that evaporates or is otherwise not returned). It can count only on-site cooling water, or add the far larger volume used to generate the electricity its data centers draw. A per-prompt figure can cover only the chips doing the work, or the whole facility, or a full life cycle that includes manufacturing the servers. And a company total usually covers every data center and office, not just AI.

This dataset keeps those measures apart. The companies table lists what each company prints in its own sustainability report or data sheet, with units as stated, the scope of the figure, and a normalized value in million cubic meters or gigawatt-hours only where the conversion is unambiguous. The per prompt table lists every per-query disclosure and research estimate that could be checked against the original document, with a column saying exactly what each one covers. The grid table holds the macro estimates from the International Energy Agency and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Every number links to the page or passage where it is printed. Where a company publishes nothing, as with OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI at the company level, the table says so rather than filling the gap with an outside estimate. Compare rows only after checking the scope and covers columns: a 45 mL life cycle figure and a 0.26 mL on-site figure are not measuring the same thing.

Methodology

How the data was compiled. On 2026-10-29 every figure was checked against the primary document: the company's own sustainability report, data sheet, regulatory filing or blog, the research paper itself, or the IEA and Berkeley Lab reports. Each link points to the PDF page (#page=N) or to a text fragment that appears verbatim on the cited web page. Figures that could only be found in news coverage, or that did not match the primary document, were left out.

Exceptions. Digital Realty's PUE and WUE come from the company's own press release about its 2025 Impact Report, because the report PDF could not be retrieved; this is noted in the row. Alibaba's ESG report PDF has a font-encoded text layer, so its values were decoded and cross-checked against neighbouring years and totals.

Definitions.

  • Water withdrawal: all water taken from any source (municipal supply, surface water, groundwater) in the period (GRI 303-3).
  • Water consumption: withdrawal minus water discharged back to the same source, mostly water evaporated in cooling (GRI 303-5).
  • On-site versus indirect water: on-site water is used at the data center itself. Indirect water is used to generate the electricity it consumes; the IEA and Berkeley Lab estimate it is larger than on-site use.
  • PUE (power usage effectiveness): total facility energy divided by IT equipment energy. 1.0 would mean no overhead.
  • WUE (water usage effectiveness): liters of water per kilowatt-hour, usually of IT energy. Companies differ on whether the numerator is withdrawal or consumption and what it includes, so WUE values are not strictly comparable across companies.

Conversions. 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters. 1 megaliter (ML) = 1,000 m³. One tonne of water is treated as 1 m³. MWh are divided by 1,000 for GWh. Normalized columns are left empty when a company reports total energy rather than electricity, or a figure that is neither withdrawal nor consumption.

Corrections. If a figure is wrong, out of date, or a newer report has been published, email editors@thefrontierwire.com with the document link and page number. The table and the date above are updated.

Questions readers ask

How much water does ChatGPT use per prompt?

OpenAI has not published a measured figure. Its CEO, Sam Altman, wrote in June 2025 that an average ChatGPT query uses about 0.000085 gallons of water (about 0.32 mL) and 0.34 Wh of electricity, without describing the method. For comparison, Google measured 0.26 mL for a median Gemini Apps text prompt, Microsoft estimates 0.0 to 0.067 mL for a typical query to a large production model, and Mistral's life cycle assessment gives 45 mL for a 400-token Le Chat response, a figure that includes water used to make the hardware.

How much water does AI use in total?

No company reports AI separately from its other data center and office use. Company-wide water consumption was 41.1 million m³ for Google in 2025, 8.2 million m³ for Microsoft in FY2025 and 3.1 million m³ for Meta in 2024. The IEA estimates all data centres worldwide consume around 560 billion litres a year once electricity generation and chipmaking are included, rising to around 1,200 billion litres by 2030. Berkeley Lab puts direct on-site consumption by US data centers at 66 billion liters in 2023. OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI publish no company totals.

How much electricity does AI use?

The IEA estimates data centres used about 415 TWh in 2024, around 1.5% of global electricity, and projects around 945 TWh by 2030 in its Base Case, with electricity use in accelerated (mainly AI) servers growing about 30% a year. Berkeley Lab estimates US data centers used 192 TWh in 2024 (4.7% of US electricity) and projects 649 TWh by 2030 in its Reference Case. Per query, Google measured 0.24 Wh for a median Gemini text prompt and a Microsoft Research study in Joule estimates a median of 0.31 Wh for frontier-scale models.

What is WUE?

Water usage effectiveness is liters of water per kilowatt-hour of energy, usually IT energy. Lower is better. Reported values range from 0.12 L/kWh (Amazon, 2025) and 0.19 (Meta, 2024) to 0.27 (Microsoft, FY2025), 0.91 (Equinix, 2025), 1.15 (Google, consumptive basis), 1.198 (Alibaba Cloud, FY2026), 1.50 (Tencent, 2025) and 1.65 (Baidu, 2025). Companies define the numerator differently, so treat cross-company comparisons with care.

What is the difference between water withdrawal and water consumption?

Withdrawal is all the water a company takes in; consumption is the part not returned, mostly evaporated in cooling. Google withdrew 14,689 million gallons in 2025 and consumed 10,869 million gallons. Microsoft withdrew 13,266 megaliters in FY2025 and consumed 8,170. Amazon and Meta's WUE figures are based on withdrawal; Google's 1.15 L/kWh is based on consumption.
